Samsung Galaxy Note – Phone or Tablet?
The difference between smartphones and tablets is begining to blur with the arrival of the Galaxy Note from Samsung. At 5.3″, it is larger than your standard 4 inch smartphone. But it is smaller than the smaller tablets of 7 inches. So which is it? Is it a handset? Is it a tablet? Usually there isn’t too much argument, but in the case of the Galaxy Note it may very well depend on the size of your hands. Design Measuring 147x83x10mm (weighing 178g) and with a screen size of 5.3 inches it’s very much on the borderline between a massive phone, like HTC’s Sensation XL (4.7-inch screen), or a mini tablet, like Samsung’s Galaxy Tab (various sizes, but the smallest has a 7-inch screen). Samsung seems pretty sure it’s a handset though, since it’s given it Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread for its operating system, rather than the tablet-optimised version 3.2, Honeycomb. The mammoth 5.3-inch WXGA screen is a wonder to behold. The pixel count of 1280×800 would be impressive enough on its own but with Samsung’s Super AMOLED technology it’s fantastically bright and vivid, with extremely deep, immersive blacks, drawing your eyes into pictures, web pages and videos. Tablet computers have taken the world by storm. Ipads and android tablets are everywhere. You know you want one — but do you want the $500+ price tag? Well, the Kindle Fire and Barnes and Noble Nook, which started out as just e-readers, now do many of the functions of tablets — for less than half the price! Check out the Kindle Fire: The Amazon Kindle Fire has been much talked about because Amazon is taking a “good enough” approach to competing with established tablet players like the Samsung or Apple. Many prospect Kindle Fire buyers would not spend $300 more to get a high-end tablet, so Amazon is not really trying to steal share, but it tries to make the tablet market bigger, faster. The real question is: what can the Kindle Fire do for you, who is it for, and should you get one? Lets take a look… At first glance, it looks like Amazon has chosen to let the Kindle Fire imitate the design of the Blackberry Playbook. But the resemblance is only superficial even if their thickness are quasi-identical. At 413g the Kindle Fire is 30% lighter than the iPad 2. Yet, it feels relatively heavy in [...]
